Ex-UN Secretary-General Ban makes surprise visit to Myanmar

BANGKOK (AP) — Former U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has made a surprise visit to military-run Myanmar on behalf of a group of elder statesmen that engages in peacemaking and human rights initiatives around the world. State television MRTV says Ban, deputy chair of The Elders, met with top leader Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing and exchanged views on the situation in the country. Myanmar has been wracked by violence since the army ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021. Ban reportedly did not meet with Suu Kyi during his visit. The Elders was founded by Nelson Mandela in 2007 and comprises mostly retired world leaders. The group did not immediately release any details about Ban’s visit.
