Fred Meyer donates 400,000 meals to Idaho in 2022

KIFI

BOISE, Idaho (KIFI) - September is Hunger Action Month, and Fred Meyer stores are partnering with the Feeding America network of food banks through a “Hunger Free” fundraising campaign to help reach Zero Hunger in our communities.

Locally, Fred Meyer has directed a record one-year total of 401,913 meals in 2022 to fight food insecurity and hunger in the state of Idaho. So far, in the first quarter of 2023, Fred Meyer associates have rescued 95,277 pounds of wholesome food from stores, food processing plants and distribution centers. This equates to 73,858 meals provided by reclaimed food.

Now until Sept. 30, Fred Meyer customers can round up their purchase or buy a $10 virtual bag filled with nutritious items for local food banks. Round up donations will go to the Zero Hunger Zero Waste Foundation which supports local Feeding America foodbank affiliates. The virtual bag donations will be delivered by Fred Meyer to the local Feeding America partner warehouse.

“Fred Meyer is on a mission to end hunger in the places we call home,” says Tiffany Sanders, manager of corporate affairs for Fred Meyer stores. “There is a fundamental absurdity in our food system: 35% of the food produced in the U.S. is thrown away, yet an estimated 42 million Americans struggle with hunger.”
