Davis High School Hit With $16k In Soda Fines

Davis High School is pulling the plug on vending machines after getting hit with more than $16,000 in fines for making soda pop available during lunch hour.

Officials say federal rules ban the sale of soda or candy during lunch to avoid competition with healthier foods.

Davis High School Principal Dee Burton tells the Standard-Examiner of Ogden that he shut down the vending machines indefinitely because the school can’t afford to risk any more fines.

Utah’s nutrition cop at schools, however, tells The Associated Press the penalties are for selling soda from a bookstore with a serving window that opens onto the school cafeteria.

Child Nutrition Program Director Luann Elliott says the principal at Davis High School is just calling a time-out on all sales of soda or candy.
