Federal grant to help laid-off Nonpareil workers

The U.S. Department of Labor has announced an emergency grant to provide re-employment service to about 50 former workers at a potato processing facility in Blackfoot.

When Nonpareil Farms sold its operation to Basic American Foods in February, it put 93 workers out of a job. After another round of layoffs at the plant in May, the total number of affected workers rose to 130.

The Idaho Department of Labor will use the $366,087 grant to provide dislocated workers with career guidance, job search support, on-the-job and skill training, as well as English as a Second Language classes.

The National Emergency Grant is part of the Secretary of Labor’s discretionary fund and is awarded based on a state’s ability to meet specific guidelines.
