2 die in canal crash

Two people died when an SUV crashed into a canal near Rigby on Wednesday.

The 2001 Trailblazer left the road and crashed into a canal at 440 N. 3950 East near Rigby.

The victims were identified as the owner and driver of the SUV, Richard Eugene Amos, 54, of Rigby, and his passenger, Skippy Ray McMurdo, 53, of Idaho Falls.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s office said the crash wasn’t discovered for several hours.

Both men were found dead when emergency crews arrived at the crash at 4:45 p.m.

The sheriff’s office said family members last heard from the victims around 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

They said a Jefferson County resident was walking down the road when she found a headlight and a piece of a sign along the road. After crossing the canal she saw the SUV. The sheriff’s office said anyone driving along the road would not have been able to see the wreckage.

Investigation into the crash is continuing.
