20 workers laid off at INL

The Idaho National Laboratory has eliminated just under 20 support positions.

INL Communications and Governmental Affairs spokesperson Misty Benjamin said all were employees of business functions that support INL operations, mostly at the INL’s Idaho Falls offices.

The cutback is directly related to reduced work scope from the U.S. Army at SMC. The Specific Manufacturing Capability fabricates and assembles materials that go into the manufacture of tank armor.

Another round of job actions will be taken in December. That reduction in force will specifically affect SMC employees working on the desert site.

According to Benjamin, INL will work with impacted employees and try to help them in any way possible.

SMC has operated continuously in Idaho since 1986 and employs about 165 people.
