Marching band drum major wins Distinguished Student Award
If you get a chance to see the awardwinning Madison High School Marching Band you’ll see head drum major Bridget Garner directing them. She loves everything about the experience — from the music to the team to the lessons she learns from being involved.
“It’s a lot about individual effort, Garner said. “In some classes if one person fails it doesn’t affect anyone else. Here if one person’s off it affects the whole group, so it’s a lot of commitment to be part of the team.”
Marching band is just one of many activities Garner is involved in.
“I also do wind ensemble for second and third trimester, I do speech and debate team and compete with that,” Garner said. “I’m also a family history consultant. I go and work at a local family history center and teach classes on that.”
Garner has won many awards in speech and debate. She’s a certified life guard. She also manages to get a 4.2 GPA and loves learning.
“I just think it’s important to learn as much as I can and to do the best at everything I do and I like to learn,” Garner said.
Garner plans to serve an LDS mission and hopes to go to BYU. If there’s one thing Garner has, it’s passion. She says it’s a key to happiness and she recommends it to other students.
“Find something you love doing, then commit yourself wholly to it,” Garner said. “Don’t do anything half way. Find something you love to do and then go for it.”
