Family: Woman whose baby cut from womb critical but stable

The family of a Colorado woman whose unborn baby died after an attacker cut the fetus out of her belly says she is in critical but stable condition and resting comfortably.

In a statement, the family of 26-year-old Michelle Wilkins thanked police for their work and doctors and hospital staffers for providing compassionate care since Wednesday’s attack.

Dynel Lane, a mother of two, is accused of stabbing Wilkins, removing the baby girl and taking the fetus to the hospital, claiming she had a miscarriage. Lane is suspected of luring the expectant mother to her home with a Craigslist ad selling baby clothes.

Wilkins, who was nearly eight months pregnant, managed to call 911 for help.

Authorities say the 34-year-old Lane told her family she was pregnant.
