State issues norovirus warning in southeastern Idaho
The state has issued a norovirus outbreak for southeastern Idaho after health officials say they’ve seen an increase in cases in the area this year.
This is also known as the stomach flu or food poisoning. Even though people call it the stomach flu, it is not influenza. They share share similar symptoms, but influenza is a respiratory illness.
The norovirus can make you extremely sick with stomach pain, diarrhea and vomiting. It also can cause severe dehydration.
This virus is highly contagious, but health officials say it can be prevented.
“Stay home if you’re sick,” said epidemiologist Mike Taylor. “If you think you have a stomach bug stay home. Don’t go visit Grandma at the senior center, don’t go swimming- you’re only going to cause other people to be sick, so stay home if you’re sick.”
Thoroughly washing your hands is another way to prevent the virus.
Health officials saidmany people may not even know they have norovirus because they don’t get tested.
