Snake River Offroaders work to preserve public lands
The Snake River Offroaders kicked off their 12th Annual Idaho State 4×4 Association Trail Ride and Rally Wednesday.
“I just hope everyone has a great time and can relax this weekend,” said Snake River Offroaders Land Use Officer Dennis Christensen.
For more than a decade the group has hosted this event to provide funds and cleanup efforts for public land and trails.
“The government entities that supervise them (lands) sometimes forget that these are our lands,” said Christensen. “It is our duty to keep them clean. They (the public) need to be good stewards of the land, not breaking down gates, not going where they shouldn’t be. They need to stay off trails that they shouldn’t be on and not leaving their messes. That’s what’s going to get us all kicked out.”
As a club, one of SRO’s goals is to wheel with minimal impact on the land and environment. They support organizations such as Idaho 44 State Association, Tread Lightly, and Blue Ribbon Coalition. During the ride and rally, they take their goal a step further by cleaning up trails throughout eastern Idaho.
“We hauled off almost 5,000 pounds of shooter garbage to the landfill on just one of our trails. These are efforts to keep in good standing of the Bureau of Land Management and the Forest Service.”
SRO is a family oriented club. It is encouraging anyone who is interested in helping preserve public lands to attend.
