Utah contractor hired to build District 93 high school
Hughes General Contractors’ of Utah will be in charge of building Bonneville District 93’s new high school.
The district’s decision to hire an out-of-state contractor is causing some controversy.
Many people have asked Local News 8/KIDK Eyewitness News if the decision will take away from local jobs.
Local News 8/KIDK Eyewitness News found out even though the district hired a Utah contractor those who live in our area will still be hired for work.
“If folks think that $63 million is going to Utah where the firm resides that’s really out of wack with how things are going to occur. There will be a lot folks here in our valley with jobs on this project and are able support their firms their families,” said John Pymm with Bonneville District.
Five different contracting firms were interviewed by a district committee.
The committee says Hughes General Contractors had the most experience with building high schools.
The district felt it was important to hire a firm that did a lot of building in a similar climate.
Hughes has built schools in Park City and Ogden, Utah.
The committee also liked that the firm is willing to help keep subcontracting jobs local.
“They would do training to potential subs if there were any applications involved in the construction process that they didn’t think local subs would be able to do. They would actually hold training sessions to train them how to do it so they could successfully submit bids and potentially do the work,” said Pymm.
The decision to to hire the Utah firm also boils down to who carries the risk if something goes wrong during the building process.
There are three different categories of contractors.
Construction manager general contractor, contractor manager and general contractor.
If a contractor manager is hired, they can hire a subcontractor for a specific project.
If the sub-contractor finishes the project and it’s not up to par, the district runs into issues.
The district would be responsible for making sure the subcontractor fixes the problem.
If the district hired a general contractor and the same thing happened the builder would carry the risk.
However, a construction manager general contractor like the company hired by the district carries the risk.
If something goes wrong during the construction process of building the new high school, the firm hired will be responsible.
