The ‘Pokmon Go’ effect on local businesses

Pokmon Go is the new app that has swept the nation, and it’s having some interesting effects in many ways. One of those ways is on businesses.

“They come in holding their phones, and I’m saying, ‘What’s going on?’ ‘Oh, you’re a Pokemon Stop.’ ‘Okay — what’s a Pokemon?’ (laughter),” said Karen Frandsen, Sarah’s Candy Cottage store manager.

Sarah’s candy cottage in Idaho Falls is a PokStop — a place in the game where you can spin to get items that will help you catch Pokmon.

The app has had good and bad impacts on public landmarks, but in the Idaho Falls area businesses are welcoming those who play.

“I think it’s a good thing. Usually, it’s kids and their parents. And while the kids are looking around, the parents are in awe of the wonderful candies we make here in the store,” said Frandsen.

Stores, shops, and restaurants can see an increase in foot traffic, which means more opportunities for people to stop and buy something at the building they choose to battle Pokmon or get items at.

“Well, I think it’s great. If there’s a reason for people to come other than, you know, just coming here to the dairy, it’s a wonderful thing for us,” said Alan Reed, Reed’s Dairy president.

But that increase in foot traffic can also make certain retailers nervous during closed hours late at night. Nevertheless, Sarah’s Candy Cottage and Reed’s Dairy aren’t too concerned about the nightcrawlers looking for Pokmon.

“We’re pretty well lit, and we have an alarm system, so we’re in good shape,” said Frandsen. “We’re not big fans on lurking, as you put it, but I mean, if they want to come out here on the main part of the business out front, that’s fine,” said Reed.

Across the country, some businesses have offered discounts if people come in playing Pokmon Go.
