Predictions for winter 2016

When it’s summer, it means getting out and having fun for Marshall Clinger.

“I like summer because you can get outside and experience nature,” Clinger said. “I like hiking and camping’s really fun.”

Especially on Labor Day, when Marshall’s family gets together at the Scout Mountain campgrounds to celebrate the holiday that marks the unofficial end of summer.

With summer’s end, winter is the next big season for the area. While the idea of winter makes some shudder at this point of the year, for Clinger it can bring a smile.

“I like reading books and drinking tea, so that’s one of my favorite things to do. If I could cross country ski before doing those things, it would be two times better,” he said.

That said, Marshall isn’t too big of a fan of the Old Farmer’s Almanac winter 2016 predictions. For the Intermountain Region, it predicts overall temperatures could be above normal, precipitation could be a bit below normal, and the snowiest periods will be late November, early and mid-December, and mid-January.

However, even if we might not get as much snow, Clinger said it’s really important at least one certain day has snow.

“On Christmas, it needs to be scenic, it needs to fall down outside the window— because Christmas is Christmas that way,” he said.

For fall, the Almanac is predicting below average temperatures. You can see the September and October forecasts here for Pocatello and here for Idaho Falls.
