A glance at this year’s potato harvest

Potatoes have been the talk of the town recently with it being harvest season. Many growers we’ve reached out to say everything is looking great this year.

Potato harvest is at its peak — some are just starting to dig potatoes up, and others are almost done with their crop.

“Potato crop looks really good, yes. Quality’s up and the yields are about average — maybe a little bit above average,” said R&C Farms owner Reed Searle.

Despite the potato harvest starting a little bit earlier this year, the crop is looking pretty good.
Reed’s potato farm started harvesting around August 15, and they’re trying to wrap everything up today.

“The weather’s been pretty good. This last rain we had this last week — really good for the potato growers. It softened up the clods. It’s a godsend for us,” Searle said.

R&c farms started taking the red potatoes out of the ground when they first started, followed by russets.
Now, it’s onto the yellows for the last 15 acres.

“This is what they call a specialty. Thin skin variety, yellow flesh, yellow skin. It’s one of the few varieties that are growing in popularity,” Searle said.

R&c farms mainly provide russets, reds and yellows to a company called Eagle Farms in Idaho Falls.
