Schools partake in National School Choice Week

The week is National School Choice Week in Idaho, due to a proclamation made by Gov. Butch Otter.

It is a way to raise awareness about K-12 grade school options.

Event are independently planned and funded, including in eastern Idaho.

If you are a student on a school day like today, you would expect yourself to be sitting in a classroom.

That was not the case for students of Montecello Montessori Elementary, in Ammon.

Mason and Logan are good friends at the school.

“I just had a blast with my ski instructor and I think this program should go on for a long time because it’s so fun,” Mason said.

“I like going down the skiers lane because it’s not too steep for me and it’s easy,” Logan said.

Ethan is a sixth-grader at Montecello Montessori and president of the ski club. Though he cannot ski right now, due to a broken arm, he explains he loves bonding with his peers.

“It’s a good chance to make relationships with other kids and just to bond with Idaho nature,” Ethan said.

These students are here as part of the school, showcasing what it has to offer over public schools.

Anthony Walker, who is a teacher at the school, said these events and activities fit the school’s hands-on teaching method.

“It’s a really good opportunity for them to work together, to help each other out and of course, physical activity is great!,” Walker said.

“I just think it’s wonderful that we’ve been able to have so many parents participate with their students this year,” Nari Medenhall said.

National School Choice Week is a way for parents to see what different schools have to offer and to find the one that fits their child.

It runs through this Saturday.
