Snowmobilers escape injury in Togwotee region

The Bridger Teton Avalanche Center reports two snowmobilers escaped serious injury following an avalanche in the Dry Lake area off Togwotee Pass. According to reports, one snowmobiler was partially buried and the other fully buried. Fortunately, an air bag deployed and the companion was able to find the buried rider and rescue him from the slide. An avalanche warning was issued early Thursday. The Center said “very dangerous” avalanche conditions exist and all avalanche terrain should be avoided. Conditions were described as high Thursday morning, but expected to be “extreme” by Thursday afternoon. Snowfall at higher elevations will continue to load existing wind slabs, making them larger and increasing the likelihood they will naturally release. Rain will weaken the snowpack allowing for wet slabs to occur in mid to lower elevations. Find further information at the avalanche center website here.
