Honoring local heroes
The American Red Cross of Greater Idaho held its third annual Real Heroes Awards Thursday in Idaho Falls.
Emergencies happen every day and are unpredictable. However, what is predictable is being able to count on first responders being there when you need them.
Bonneville County Sheriff Detective Korey Payne was honored at the event.
“We care about this community, and that’s why we are here. We go to those problems and try to stop any violence, help with medical emergencies and do what we can and try to do our best,” Payne said.
Eleven people were honored at the event. Local residents were also recognized for their work in the community.
“They’re everyday citizens that live amongst us and they have acted when it was needed of them,” Nicole Siraka-Irwin said.
Stephen Parker attended the ceremony with his 8-year-old son JT Parker. Last year, Parker’s son saved him when a 6,000 pound car fell on top of him crushing him. JT Parker sprung into action and lifted the car with a jack.
“I couldn’t breathe and I could of died, it was very scary,” Parkers said. “It was a power beyond him and us, our angels were there.”
Stories of miracles filled the air as one by one each hero was called to pick up their Red Cross award.
Detective Payne, who was honored, was taken by Parkers story.
“He’s a little boy and somehow received some kind heroic strength through adrenaline or through something else, he was able to get that car off of his father,” Payne said.
More than $51,000 was raised, and 100 percent of the money will go back into the community and fund emergency services.
