Police chase ends in front of Shelley High School
A police pursuit that began in Blackfoot ended approximately 30 minutes later in front of Shelley High School early Friday morning.
Bingham County Sheriff Craig Roland said the chase began shortly at about 7 a.m. after a man stole a 2002 Nissan from a Blackfoot driveway. It was parked and running.
A deputy located the vehicle and tried to stop him in Blackfoot, but the car kept driving and went north on I-15 and into the city of Shelley.
Deputies spiked the tires of the vehicle. The vehicle kept driving for several miles.
Officers thought they had the suspect cornered in the Broulim’s parking lot in Shelley, but he slipped away.
Deputies used a “pit maneuver” to force the stolen vehicle to a stop at the intersection of Hansen and Fir, near Shelley High School and the fire station.
Levi Jon Roberts, 34, Idaho Falls, was taken into custody and booked into the Bingham County jail.
Roberts is being charged with Felony Eluding, Felony possession of a stolen vehicle and misdemeanor driving under the influence.
The sheriff said there may be additional charges against Roberts after an investigation is completed on a separate stolen vehicle.
