Man shot by officer Tuesday died
UPDATE 1/24/18 12:30 p.m. Idaho Falls Police reports the man who was shot Tuesday has died.
Chief Bryce Johnson identified the man as 54-year-old Shane McVey who was pronounced dead soon after the incident occurred.
“Officer involved shootings are just traumatic events,” said Chief Johnson. “They are traumatic for everyone involved. They are traumatic for the person involved in the shooting. Traumatic for their family. Traumatic for officers. Traumatic for officer’s families. It’s traumatic for the community.”
Chief Johnson said three officers were initially reported to have responded to the incident. Johnson corrected this number to two.
According to Johnson, two IFPD officers have been placed on paid administrative leave, and names will be released later this week.
Chief Johnson said he can’t comment on the type of weapon McVey had until the investigation is complete.
All roads that were blocked off are now open.
Because this was an officer involved shooting, the Eastern Idaho Regional Critical Incident Task Force along with Idaho State Police has taken over the situation.
UPDATE 6:10 p.m.: One man is in the hospital after a shooting near a local convenient store Tuesday afternoon.
Idaho Falls public safety dispatch received a call about a suspicious adult male near the intersection of South Blvd. & Elm Street around 2:04 p.m.
Three Idaho Falls Police officers responded to the call, and when officers attempted to talk with the man, he fled to a residential apartment building near North Corner Ave. and Elm Street.
Police said when officers attempted to apprehend the suspect, the man displayed a weapon.
One officer fired upon the suspect, and officers immediately began performing CPR on the man until emergency medical services arrived.
The man was transported to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center at 2:26 p.m., and no information about the victim’s medical condition is available for release.
Police do not believe there is any existing threat to the public.
The scene of the incident was cordoned off.
Most of the investigation area which closed portions of South Boulevard, 10th, 11th & 12th Streets, Ash Street, Elm Street and Corner Street has been reopened. (See below.)
Police are keeping Corner Ave. between Walnut and Elm St. closed as of 6:10 p.m.
The Eastern Idaho Regional Critical Incident Task Force is conducting a comprehensive investigation of the incident. The task force is made up of various law enforcement agencies in Eastern Idaho and is led by the Idaho State Police.
UPDATE 5:15 p.m.: Idaho Falls Police have opened South Boulevard and are getting ready to open Elm Street in a few minutes.

Idaho Falls Police have cordoned off an area on South Boulevard at Elm Street at the Common Cents convenience store.
Police were called to the scene around 2:30 p.m. on reports of a gun shot being fired.According to police a man did not comply with officers demands and charged at them with some kind of weapon. One officer fired and hit the man. He was taken to a hospital.
