The Latest: Funding for treasurer race heats up

The Latest on campaign sunshine reports being filed to Idaho’s secretary of state’s office:

3:30 p.m.

Idaho GOP Treasurer candidate Tom Kealey has raised nearly $100,000 in his bid for the open statewide position.

Kealey’s latest campaign finance disclosure report shows that the Republican has donated $20,000 of his money to the campaign and raised nearly $77,000 from 193 donors.

Fellow Republican opponent Vicky McIntyre has raised roughly $8,600.

No Democratic candidate has filed to run for the seat.

The position is wide open after incumbent Treasurer Ron Crane said he would not seek a sixth four-year term.

The treasurer serves as Idaho’s chief financial officer and manages $2.7 billion of state investments. The treasurer is also in charge of investing idle state funds and acts as the custodian for worker’s compensation insurance securities and the Endowment Public School Income Fund.

The race to be Idaho’s next state schools chief isn’t seeing a flood of cash.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Sherri Ybarra, currently the Republican incumbent, raised $3,400 during the second half of 2017.

In total, Ybarra collected $4,300 in contributions for all of 2017. She had roughly $2,400 still on hand as of the end of December.

Ybarra is running for a second term against GOP opponent Jeff Dillon, a Wilder School superintendent, who barely outraised Ybarra during the same timeframe.

According to Dillon’s latest campaign finance disclosure reports, Dillon raised $5,200 between June and December and raised an overall $8,000 for the entire year. He had $373 on hand as of December.

Ybarra won the 2014 primary against three other opponents after raising $2,800.

Idaho candidates across the state are preparing to file the latest round of campaign financial disclosure reports with the secretary of state’s office.

The reports offer a snapshot into how the state’s most competitive political races are shaking out nearly four months before the May primary election.

Candidates have until 5 p.m. Wednesday to file their end-of-year report. The last time candidates had to file campaign finance disclosure reports was at the end of July.

As of early afternoon Wednesday, none of the state’s top Republican gubernatorial candidate had filed their report.

Meanwhile, Democratic gubernatorial candidate A.J. Balukoff’s report shows he gave $175,000 of his own money to his campaign and raised roughly $6,200 in contributions from supporters.

Balukoff’s opponent, Democratic state Rep. Paulette Jordan, has not yet filed her report to the secretary of state’s office.
