Tech free spring break can have benefits inside the classroom
Spring break is a time when students hit the pause button on their learning, and often want to stay indoors and spend excess amounts of time on their screens.
Our children today live in a tech-saturated world, relying heavily on cell phones and video games for entertainment, rather than the outdoors.
But the YMCA Learning Center says it doesn’t have to be this way. Children can also receive enjoyment from getting active, which leaves a lasting impact inside the classroom.
“We focus on children getting out, being active, being full of play, and when kids are engaging in that manner, we find that they do better in school, with interaction, that is a great way to meet friends, versus sitting on the couch,” said Donovan Stokes.
Often times, electronics can take hold, especially when school is out.
“We pay close attention to making sure that our kids remain healthy in all areas, and not allowing the TV or the video games to become the surrogate parent if you will, so it’s very important that children receive that type of activity.”
The Boy Scouts of America also explained how the state of Idaho gives kids the perfect setting to explore the great outdoors.
David Widdison explained, “It’s so important for the kids to get connected with nature, and feel that grounding power that being out in nature has. So many of the kids and adults, we our iPhones and iPads and everything with us 24/7, and we’re getting that stimulation electronically, and our bodies are built to be outside and absorb the wonders.”
On April 21, the YMCA will hold “Healthy Kids Day”, a national initiative to improve the health and well-being of kids. This free event is open to the public, and will take place at seven different centers across Idaho:
Downtown Family YMCA: Boise
