High water levels may hide river hazards
High water levels are making the Snake River a dangerous place to boat this summer.
The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office says Palisades Dam outflow is approximately 19,000 cubic feet per second (CFS). That is more than enough to float debris from the banks and cover rocks and fallen trees in the waterway.
Those hidden hazards can easily damage or capsize a boat before anyone who is not wearing a life jacket to put one on. And, officials say water temperatures are cold enough to put a person into hypothermia and hamper their ability to help themselves or anyone else.
The Idaho Parks and Recreation Department has posted a website to help boaters become better prepared. You can find it here.
