Burnout operations planned along Highway 191
The Bridger-Teton National Forest has scheduled “burnout operations” along Highway 191 this week.
A “burnout” involves the intentional setting of a fire inside a control line to either widen it or consume fuel between the edge of the fire and the control line.
As part of its effort to contain the Roosevelt Fire, firefighters will be working on the south side of the highway.
The highway will remain open during the operation, with a pilot car escorting travelers through the burnout area.
The burnout operation is planned from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday and between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.
The forest said there is potential for full closure of the highway at any time, based on fire activity or on the course of the burnout.
