Volkswagen settlement could help Wyoming businesses

Some Wyoming businesses that operate diesel vehicles may be eligible for funds to help purchase a new diesel, compressed natural gas, propane or electric vehicle to replace them.

The state of Wyoming has $8.2 million in funding as the result of a partial consent decree with Volkswagen. The carmaker used defeat devices that allowed their vehicles to produce NOx emissions in excess of what they were allowed by law. The Environmental Protection Agency has resolved a civil enforcement case against Volkswagen through a series of three partial settlements.

Yellowstone-Teton Clean Cities and Energy Conservation Works will host a public information session in Jackson Wednesday to explain the settlement agreement.

The replacement program applies to vehicles built in model years 1992-2006.

The agreement also included an electric vehicle charging infrastructure application, that has not yet been released.

There will be two information sessions in Jackson to walk through the application requirements and help people determine if their vehicles are eligible.

In the first round of funding, there is $750,000 available to the state of Wyoming. Applications are due by March 31, 2019.
