Family: Utah infant died after brain surgery, sitter held
The family of a 4-month-old baby being cared for by a teen babysitter now facing abuse charges says the infant has died.
The baby’s great aunt Elena Ratcliffe told KSL-TV the infant, Adalyn, died Friday after doctors performed a second brain scan on the infant and did not detect any brain wave activity.
West Valley City Police Lt. Kent Stokes says infant’s 16-year-old babysitter had been watching the baby Tuesday night when police responded to a report of an unresponsive child. Police found the infant unconscious and performed CPR.
Stokes says the baby was transported to Primary Children’s Hospital where a doctor said he noticed signs of shaken baby syndrome.
The teen has been charged with felony child abuse and could face homicide charges.
