Train derails in Jasper, trapping crew in engine room

JASPER, Alabama (WVTM) — Authorities are investigating the derailment of a Norfolk Southern train in Jasper on Sunday.
The Jasper Police Department was notified Saturday night of the accident at 1350 Old Russellville Road.
According to Norfolk Southern, 11 cars and the lead locomotive derailed from the train.
Police said the crew was trapped in the engine room for a brief time because the engine tilted over.
RPS was called to the scene to evaluate the crew. Two members went to the hospital as a precaution, and were released. There were no major injuries.
Jasper Fire called all personnel in to assist the crew in getting out of the train and managing the scene, along with Jasper Police.
Norfolk Southern crews worked through the night along with Walker County EMA. All cars have been cleared from the track.
No word on what caused the derailment.
