Why you should consider creating a will
IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) - Thinking about creating a will might be a little morbid to think about, but it can be a big help to your loved ones.
Dying without a will can have some serious consequences, but only 32% of Americans have one.
Since 2015, Caring.com has been sending annual surveys to help people understand the importance of estate planning.
This year, more than 2,400 people took their survey, and of those surveyed, 40% say they don't think they need a will.
"People think, especially with some of the inflation things happening, that they don't have enough assets to really need one or that they even know how to get started. And then on top of that, what about that cost factor and what really options fit them and their family in their situation the best? So I think it's a little bit of procrastination, maybe not having major life events that have happened yet that usually spurn wills," Caring.com Senior Vice President Susann Crawford said.
Not having a will can also create some problems for your loved ones.
Caring.com says in Idaho, it can take up to two years or more to go through the probate process.
Arguably the most shocking finding shows since 2020, there is an increase in young americans getting a will.
"They want to set their loved ones up for an easier time. When anything like this happens. I think that they're thinking more future forward based off of their own experiences," Crawford said.
