Blackfoot High School Hosts Career Fair

The Idaho Department of Labor hosted a career fair at Blackfoot High School on Tuesday. The goal? To show kids how many options they have right here in Idaho after graduation.

There were dozens of local businesses and universities from the Idaho and Utah region.

For Blackfoot High School junior Emily Gardner, Tuesday’s career fair was a bit of an eye-opener.

“I have been learning a lot, it’s really really cool,” said Gardner.

The school gymnasium was filled with students from 5 area high schools, and employers and universities from across the state, each with their own little way of grabbing attention. The Hair Academy cosmetology school in Rexburg had their stylists working for free.

“As the admission’s leader, I love helping the students to achieve their dream whatever it is, and help them get a job in whatever it is they want to do in the industry,” said Brandie Miguel.

Department of Labor regional economist Dan Cravens said it’s important for community businesses to give that sort of support.

“We, like a lot of other communities in the United States and in Idaho here, constantly battle and struggle to keep our talented young people in the community,” said Cravens.

Even still, Selena Garcia said, she’s happy there are some out-of-state options at the fair, but she’s open minded to staying in Idaho.

“It’s a possibility, but not likely,” said Garcia.

Students from Firth, Shelley, Sho-Ban, Snake River and Blackfoot High Schools got to attend the fair during their regular school day on Tuesday.

Big regional employers like the Idaho National Lab and Idaho Power were also at the fair.
