Rexburg council clears housing projects

Three conditional-use permits will clear the path for new housing construction in Rexburg.

The first, at 149 S. First West, will allow developers to build housing for 1,028 single students and another 32 units of community (married) housing in a separate area within the development. The five-story housing units directly north of the former Ricks College Viking Stadium will also include a five-story parking structure that will not be visible from the street.

City Clerk Blair Kay says another 20-acre project, at 900 S. Fifth West, will allow construction of multiple buildings. Each building will be allowed up to 24 units. The community housing project will be built in phases through 2014.

The City Council has also approved a conditional-use permit that will adjust parking requirements for property located at 51 S. First East. The former Raquetball Club building is being converted to apartment housing. The CUP will lower parking requirements for the property by placing it into a Pedestrian Emphasis Zone.
