Pebble Creek annual race draws smaller crowd

Pebble Creek is buzzing with skiers at this year’s annual Dual Challenge Slalom race.

For nearly three decades dozens of skiers have been coming out for one day where they can race each other down the slopes for bragging rights. What first started as a competition for adult skiers, complete with a keg that was brought out after the races were over, has turned into a family event with people of all ages participating in the race.

“I love racing. It’s just really fun,” said 7-year-old skier and first-time competitor, Taylor Moehrke.

Pocatello Ski Association President Liz Benson, and also known as the “race lady” by the kids in the program, said holding the competition this late in the season brought attendance down this year.

“It usually comes toward the end of the season, but it is too far toward the end of the season this year,” Benson said. “We did have a small turnout, but the kids still had a blast.”

Benson said only 21 people showed-up today, whereas normal attendance in the past has averaged between 40 to 50 competitors.

Lee Abraszewski and Sheri Jorgensen, long-time friends, both decided to come out and race each other today.

“It’s just for fun,” Jorgensen said. “But the conditions are fast, very fast.”

“The very top inch may be soft, but there are some ice spots. But, it’s nice. Fast,” Abraszeweski said.

On the other side, some of the younger racers today came out without knowing they would be making friends with their competitors.

“I just met her today, but shes’ really cool, so we’ll ski together,” 15-year-old Nina Harelson said after racing Moehrke.

With the competition drawing-out skiers from the community who just want to enjoy the sunny skies today, Benson waived the five-dollar sign-up fee, saying this year is just about having a fun time.
