Road Closures Begin for 4th of July

The Fourth of July draws in more than 100,000 people to Idaho Falls. Hosting so many people means there will be major road closures around the city, and the closures will begin this week.

River Parkway closes Saturday to vehicle traffic north of the Driftwood Hotel to U.S 20.

Parking will also be limited around Idaho Falls with major delays downtown.

“We have a huge crowd that comes down for the Fourth of July festivities,” said Joelyn Hansen, spokesperson for the Idaho Falls Police Department.

People are expected from all over eastern Idaho.

The northbound ramp on Interstate 15 at exit 119 will be closed. Hansen says it’s best to stay on the west side of the river.

Memorial Drive, from Broadway to E street will be closed beginning July 3, and all roads near Civitan Park will be closed.

Most road closured and parking restrictions will begin 48 hours prior to the holiday.

Driving around Idaho Falls on the Fourth is just half the battle — finding parking will also be tough.

“Obviously there is not a lot of parking downtown where everyone wants to be,” said Hansen.

No parking will be allowed around Civitan Park. Police say cars parked where they shouldn’t be will be towed.

Parking will not be allowed on Riverside Drive, and cars parked on the grassy areas from Science Center Drive to Saturn Avenue will also be towed.

Police said people are welcome to come down early and find a spot, but staking is not allowed.
“That’s not your property. You don’t own that spot,” said Hansen. She added safety and security is a top priority.

Law enforcement will be out patrolling all day.

“It is very well manned,” said Hansen.

She said the one thing everyone needs to bring is their patience.

“Patience is probably the No. 1 key. when you’re talking that many people and you’ve got that many road closures. You’re going to have delays getting out. You just need to be patient,” she said.

Certain roads will also be closed following the fireworks show to ease congestion.

Police also said no alcohol, explosives or personal fireworks will be allowed.
