Coast Guardsman from Idaho Falls dies after rescue
A Coast Guardsman from Idaho Falls has died.
Travis Obendorf suffered injuries while rescuing crew members from a disabled fishing vessel off the coast of Alaska about a month ago. He died Wednesday.
His remains were to be returned to Idaho Falls early Monday afternoon, arriving at the Idaho Falls Airport with full military honors.
“Petty Officer Obendorf’s selfless actions directly contributed to rescuing five mariners in distress. His willingness to assist others, even amidst the dangerous environment of the Bering Sea, truly embodies the Coast Guard’s core values,” said Waesche’s commanding officer, Capt. John McKinley, in a Coast Guard news release. “Travis will be sadly missed.”
Obendorf was a graduate of Idaho Falls High School. He joined the coast guard in 2004. He was 28 years old.
