Junior high students get taste of college

Students at Eagle Rock Junior High have been getting a taste of college.

Over the past few weeks, they have been working on the College Knowledge Project. The program helps students get informed and interested in higher education.

First, students are assigned to a state. They then research that state’s colleges. Many of the schools sent free gifts, such as bags and shirts.

With the information they gathered, the students made posters about the colleges.

“Two schools that really interest me are Harvard and Stanford,” said student Braden Haight. “When I grow up, I want to be a professional golfer, but if that doesn’t work out, I want to be an architect or mechanical engineer.”

One junior high official said this has been beneficial for the students.

“I think the biggest reward for us has been the payoff of their enthusiasm and their thinking about going, and they know there is something more for them after high school,” said school counselor Jenni Home.
