BYU-Idaho cleans up after flooding

Brigham Young University-Idaho crews and contractors worked through the night to clean up campus buildings after Rexburg experienced flooding Tuesday.

With the exception of the Smith building, which was closed because of electrical concerns, everything was open Wednesday, university spokesman Marc Stevens said. Stevens said the Smith building would be open Thursday.

Dehumidifiers will be set up Wednesday night and run through the weekend in the Manwaring Center, Kirkham and Smith buildings.

In student housing, where lower apartments were flooded, students moved into upstairs accommodations.

According to Idaho Homeland Security regional director Mike Clements, “the city of Rexburg did an outstanding job of dealing with the situation.”

Although a community shelter was opened at the BYU Idaho Center, no one checked in.

There was major crop damage caused by hail during the storm. And some homes were flooded with raw sewage.

Madison Memorial Hospital Facilities Director Lee Bowman said three parts of the hospital had water damage: physical therapy, infusion therapy and a housekeeping storage area. No patient services were affected, and the hospital was open as usual Wednesday.
