Teton Valley farmers hope for emergency declaration

Some Teton Valley farmers are fearing the worst after a heavy August downpour ruined many of their crops.

Hay farmer Harley Hill said he is hoping for an emergency declaration so he can qualify for government assistance.

Hill said his profits are already wiped out and he’s hoping to at least break even.

“I’m seeing signs of possibly mold damage. Some black tip on the barley. I’m seeing some sprout damage, and then in the protein wheats, of course, you lose protein with every rainstorm, but also sprout damage is a very serious thing too,” said Hill.

Teton County has yet to ask for an emergency declaration, but Hill said he doesn’t think one is far off.
