Standoff suspect will face misdemeanor obstruction charge
Blackfoot police say 45-year-old Scott Phillips will face a misdemeanor charge of obstructing a police officer after barricading himself in the Blackbird produce store for 14 hours Thursday.
Phillips wasn’t booked and was taken for treatment, according to Capt. Scott Gay, with the Blackfoot Police Department.
During Thursday’s standoff, SWAT teams had to be called in from nearby counties, streets were blocked off, and some nearby residents had to be evacuated.
Police said they were trying to serve Phillips with warrants around 3 a.m. when he barricaded himself inside Blackbird. According to police, those warrants were rescinded later in the day.
Just before 5 p.m. Thursday, Phillips surrendered and was taken into custody without incident.
The Bingham County Prosecuting Attorney’s office said there have been no requests for felony charges at this point.
Phillips’ wife, Penny, has a released a statement on Facebook:
“To all the people in Blackfoot who have tried to analyze the unfortunate situation that happened today — I am his wife and at no point did Scott ever threaten anyone. If he was to harm anyone it was going to be himself and that is what he told the police. Anyone who personally knows Scott can say he is one of the most giving caring individuals and would help anyone in need. Everyone has hardships and obstacles in life. For others to judge and ridicule is wrong. Thank you to all our friends and family in the community who have reached out with kind words and support,” it reads.
