Unknown substance found on BYU-Idaho campus identified

The Madison County Fire Department has identified a substance found near an unattended backpack on the Brigham Young University-Idaho campus as magnesium carbonate.

The bag was found near the Manwaring Center around 11 a.m. The area was taped off for much of Monday afternoon.

“Our main goal and objective objective was to identify the unknown substance so the university could properly dispose of it,” said Assistant Chief Mikel Walker in a news release. “Our first concern is always life safety followed by incident stabilization. Never at any time did we feel the public was in danger. We simply wanted to identify the substance so we could safely dispose of it.”

This came a day after a shooting threat on social media that BYU-Idaho officials have called a “bad joke.”
