Fourth grader becomes principal for a day

As soon as the first bell rang, nine-year old Isaac Wilks showed up to school, this time reporting straight to the principal’s office.

But, he wasn’t in trouble.

In fact, he was reporting for work.

“It’s awesome because you get to see different things that not everybody gets to see,” Wilks said.

On Wednesday, Wilks had the opportunity to shadow Edahow Elementary School principal Nick Muckerman, as the “principal for the day” to learn what the job entails.

“I wish I could do this with every student and with all of the positions at our school because everyone does their part in some way or another,” Muckerman said.

Wilks said the day-to-day agenda of the principal is a strenuous one.

“It’s not easy because every step you take, it could be a wrong turn,” Wilks said in relation to the careful planning of Muckerman’s busy schedule during his daily classroom rounds.

Since this is Muckerman’s first year as the school’s principal, he wanted to find a way to get to know as many parents at the school as possible.

So, during this year’s PTO carnival fundraiser, he told students he would enter their name in a drawing to become principal for the day if they introduced him to their parents.

Both Muckerman and Wilks said they found this to be a tremendous learning experience and hope to continue this event every year.
