How weather affects crime in eastern Idaho
The Idaho Falls Police Department said weather affects crime in several ways. Senior Patrol Officer Paul Murray with IFPD, said when the temperature drops outdoor crimes decrease.
“For the most part we see a drop in burglaries and business thefts. Some people realize that when there is snow that there is a pattern on the ground and if they try to steal from a garage or car they will be leaving footprints,” Murray said.
The most recent statistics from the Police Department show that during July 2013 there were 128 cases of larceny, 32 cases of burglary, 48 incidences of vandalism and 10 vehicle thefts.
In December 2013 there were 85 cases of larceny, 23 burglaries, 29 cases of vandalism and three car thefts.
“Because of the colder temperatures we see a lot of domestic violence calls and family disputes because people don’t have the outlet to go outside,” said Murray.
Murray also said just because certain crimes decrease when it gets cold, doesn’t mean you’re always safe from becoming a victim of crime during the holiday months.
“For the most part the crime for vehicle burglaries in Idaho Falls is that they will go around in a neighborhood and just start pulling on door handles to see what’s open,” he said.
IFPD said about nine out of 10 vehicles are unlocked when they get broken into in Idaho Falls.
Police also recommend not leaving gifts or receipts inside your vehicle during the holiday season. You should also make sure your doors and windows are locked. Also, don’t leave belongings, like your wallet or purse, in the car.
