3,000 Race to feed the hungry

While many rushed to the store Thanksgiving morning to get last minute items, many were racing to the finish line at Freeman Park.

Event organizer Michael Hays said he expected 3,000 runners at this years race.

“This is a tradition for many families in the area. We have one family that has more than 90 members between grandparents, parents, children and grandchildren,” said Hays.

Hays said many families like running the morning race because proceeds and canned good donations go to the Idaho Falls Community Food Bank. With the increased attendance, Hays said he expects donations will feed 75,000 people.

“It may help some multiple times, it may help one family one time, it may help a grandfather that’s out of work for a day,” he said. “It sends the message that we may not be our brother’s keeper, but we are our brother’s brother.”
