15,000 randomly chosen in Rexburg for RMP energy consumption report

The power company has introduced a new home energy report to start the new year.

This week, 15,000 randomly chosen Rexburg residents received a letters in the mail that could save them quite a bit of money.

“That report will compare them to like-size homes similarly equipped,” said Tim Solomon of Rocky Mountain Power. “Now, it won’t be people on their block or necessarily in their subdivision, but it will be similar homes.”

The report focuses on four major categories: heating, air conditioning, insulation and lighting.

Everything on the consumption report is confidential.

The power company comes up with the reports by gathering tax assessor records and information from the Census Bureau.

Along with the electricity consumption comparison, customers will be able to see the history of how much power has been used at their address in the past.

The report also includes tips and tricks on how to save both energy and cash.

For more benefits and a more thorough report, consumers can go online and enter more specific information about their homes.

“Within the context of the report, you will be able to go online and be able to talk about how to reduce energy using incentives that we offer, so they’ll go to wattsmart.com and they’ll find out how to get cash incentives to save energy,” Solomon said.

Those who were randomly selected are able to opt out of the program.

The report has a link to a website where you can go online and follow steps to discontinue the service.

As of right now, the service is in a trial period, but the company hopes to make it available to everyone.
