Rumors circulate on Romney 2016 candidacy
‘Third time is a charm’ for former presidential candidate Mitt Romney who may be looking at another try at the White House after he was overheard making a similar comment to potential donors in New York on Friday.
Romney could be throwing his hat in the ring, following recent attention surrounding the announcement republican candidate Jeb Bush will be running for the 2016 presidential seat.
Local members of the republican party said there are numerous factors behind why Romney could run again, including the recent Bush announcement.
“I think it speaks to a lot of different factors including how much money it takes to run for President, the fact that Jeb Bush has been getting tons of media and donor attention, and I think Mitt Romney might have felt his hand was forced and that he had to enter the race to keep his options alive,” ISU College Republicans president Dakota Bates said. “I also think it speaks to how viable the candidates are. I don’t think there are a lot of great candidates out there and the field is so wide open so Romney could have felt, ‘why not?'”
Bates said Bush has been gaining much attention from the more moderate wing of the republican party and we will soon see Romney vying for funding from the same donors.
Romney ran for President both in 2008 and again in 2012, receiving roughly 64 percent of the popular vote in Idaho.
During an interview back in March 2013, Romney told Fox News Sunday’s Chris Wallace he adamantly did not want to run again.
