Facebook users will now receive Amber Alerts for missing kids

Facebook users will soon receive Amber Alerts for missing children that might be near them.

But using social media to help with police work isn’t a new concept.

They’re turning to this more and more. That’s because it’s so easy to access.

A few years ago, you needed to be at a computer to see Facebook, but now, with smartphones, you can go on social media pretty much anywhere.

“Before, we would actually make a little poster and go hang it around the convenience stores,” said Sgt. Jeff Edwards from the Bonneville County Sheriff’s office.

But social media has made it a lot easier.

“It’s one step that’s a little quicker, and can be done from the office and save a little time,” said Edwards.

Not only does it save time, but it reaches a lot of people rather fast.

“The more people that are going to see it the more likely we’re going to catch that person or find that person a little quicker, a little easier.”

“Social media has really been a powerful tool [for] us being able to connect with the public, whether it’s the good deeds our troopers are doing out here, our partnering with the local agencies or at times asking for help,” said Lt. Chris Weadick, Idaho State Police.

“Most people will have their phone with them, Facebook on their phone, and they’ll check it several times a day,” Edwards said.

Law enforcement officials say they also use social media to give tips on how to stay safe.
