Local man refurbishes motorized wheelchairs for veterans at no cost

A collaboration between a small auto repair business and a chapter of the Vietnam Veterans Association is bringing motorized wheelchairs to veterans for free.

Brett Waters, owner of DeeRay’s Auto Body in Shelley, could be doing his many car restorations, but instead he’s working on a smaller set of wheels.

“It takes a week, on and off, to work on one and get it ready,” said Waters.

From the mechanics, to the upholstery and paint, Waters does it all to thank those who gave their all.

“It’s just a really good feeling,” said Waters. “It really makes you happy, and you see their faces.”

Bob Reinisch, president of Chapter 972 Vietnam Veterans Association, said Waters’ generosity is an answered prayer. He said the chapter relies mostly on donations, but unfortunately those aren’t always available.

“We’ll defray any costs that are inferred,” said Waters, adding they often cover the batteries.

Reinisch has the pleasure of getting the chairs to those in need of one.

“Deserving veterans, their spouses or their children,” said Reinisch.

He said Waters works wonders every time.

“They’re better than brand new when Brett gets done with them,” said Reinisch. “The first one we overhauled should have been thrown away.”

With another chair finished and loaded up, it leaves DeeRay’s “wheelchair rehab” to be given to someone leaving rehabilitation himself.

Shane Ackerschott is in his second month adjusting to his new life as a paraplegic.

“It was a work accident,” said Ackerschott.

The former Army National Guard soldier said the new chair will change his life.

“It’s a lot easier for me to be able to get around in an electric wheelchair than it is in a manual wheelchair,” said Ackerschott.

He said Waters, a man he’s never met, is a godsend.

“If this man does this all in the kindness of his heart, he’s truly a saint,” said Ackerschott. “There’s a lot of vets out there who can’t afford things like this.”

Reinisch said the chapter is looking for used power wheelchairs, as well as veterans and immediate family members to refurbish them for. He said the veterans will even pick them up. If you’re interested, call Bob Reinisch at (208) 541-4809. Waters’ number is 201-3992.
