Rigby may allow Sunday liquor sales
People living in Rigby looking to get a drink on the weekends have to either stock up early or leave town after Saturday. That’s because the city still doesn’t allow liquor sales on Sunday, yet.
An ordinance is on the docket that would allow local bars and stores to sell alcoholic beverages on Sunday, and local bar owners are behind the big push.
“All around us was allowing Sunday sales other than us, and I think realistically this business needs to be open,” says Garth Corton, a local bar owner.
Corton says many people who do want to go out for a a drink on Sundays end up leaving, taking their money with them. Bar goers say they’d rather stay closer to home if they can.
“I prefer that we enable our residents of this community to be able to stay in our community if they do want a drink on Sunday. They shouldn’t have to drive to another community to do that,” says Keith Smith the former mayor of Rigby.
Thursday’s City Council meeting will include the first reading of the proposed ordinance, meaning the city still has two more readings before it becomes law.
