Minor earthquake hits near Challis

A minor earthquake hit the Challis area early Thursday afternoon.

The USGS reports the magnitude 3.1 quake was centered about 6 miles east of the town of Challis in Custer County. The quake hit around 1:11 p.m. local time.

There are no reports of any damage or injury.

This latest quake follows a 4.9 magnitude earthquake that was centered in the same area on January 3rd. This latest quake could possibly be an aftershock from the early January quake.

Challis is no stranger to earthquakes, with an earthquake swarm in late 2013 and early 2014. Also, the Borah Peak Earthquake on October 28,1983 that killed 2 people.
