New ID rules to enter the INL

People who do business with the Idaho National Laboratory might come across some problems over state identifications.

The federal government put out requirements to improve security for driver’s licenses. But Idaho’s state ID’s don’t meet those requirements. The requirements come from the Real ID Act of 2005 which is is meant to make it harder for terrorists to use fake IDs.

Idaho driver’s licenses do not meet those requirements because the state Legislature prohibited the state from implementing the act.

Sen. Bart Davis said the Legislature did not put this into action for a few reasons: One is that it would be extremely expensive.

Without meeting the requirements people can be denied access to federal facilities, going on a commercial plane or entering nuclear facilities, including the INL.

INL spokesperson Misty Benjamin said starting Monday, IDs that do not comply with the Real ID Act will not be accepted.

Alternative forms of ID can be used. Those are:

U.S. passport or U.S. passport card
Current Department of Energy contractor badge (HSPD-12 credential or Common Access Card)
Permanent Resident Card or Alien Registration Receipt Card (Form I-551)
Foreign passport that contains a temporary I-551 stamp or temporary I-551 printed notation on a machine-readable immigrant visa
Employment authorization document that contains a photograph (form I-766)

Individuals previously badged at INL are grandfathered and may need to provide only a driver’s license. This does not apply to individuals who have previously been granted a Visitor Pass.

Current employees and contractors with up-to-date DOE standard badges will be fine.

Idaho is not the only state that has not put the Real ID Act into action. Other non-complying U.S. states or territories are American Samoa, Arizona, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Oklahoma and Washington.
