Assumption Greek Orthodox Church gets icons

The Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Pocatello has recently undergone a major transformation for its 100-year celebration, including bringing in iconographers from Greece to make the church one of a kind this side of the Mississippi.

Iconography is considered an ancient art, with the work having a specific technique, including elongating the nose, and making the eyes, ears and hands larger with a smaller mouth, all to indicate the figures have opened their senses to God.

The whole inside of Assumption is now covered with the icons, and the church may bring the iconographers back to do more work. All the work was intricately drawn by hand.

“But they know exactly the type of robes, where the creases are, how the faces should be,” said Father Constantine Zozos, pastor of Assumption. “It’s astounding at how talented and gifted these people are, and they take this as a type of spiritual calling to do this kind of work.”

Which is why the iconographers were chanting as they worked. The church hopes to open in time for Easter and they plan on holding open houses for visitors to come in, and learn all the details about the icons and the art of creating them.
