Man sentenced in Pocatello bank robbery

A man who robbed U.S. Bank in Pocatello in June was sentenced to at least eight years in prison Monday.

Ronald Allen Shumaker, who was facing a felony charge of robbery, switched his plea from not guilty to guilty in a plea deal last month.

On Monday, Judge Robert Naftz imposed a fixed eight-year sentence with a 12-year indeterminate sentence. Shumaker is also required to pay a restitution of $1,074 to the bank.

Defense attorney Randall Schulthies said he and Shumaker hoped Judge Naftz would have reduced the fixed sentence, but were satisfied with the sentencing.

“Given the circumstances and what the state was willing to do, we thought it was a reasonable agreement,” Schulthies said. “Given his age and other circumstances, he also thought it was a reasonable resolution.

The prosecution also requested Shumaker pay a restitution of $1,844.35 to the Bannock County Sheriff’s Department for extradition costs, but Judge Naftz denied the request.

“The current state of the law in Idaho is that officers are not victims,” Schulthies said. “It’s not a statutory cost under the Idaho structure of what are costs that can be ordered by the court.”
