Idaho Falls to take control of War Bonnet Rodeo
The city of Idaho Falls has completed a transfer of property and control of the War Bonnet Roundup Rodeo to the city.
The rodeo has been managed by the American Legion Department of Idaho Post 56. But, according to the city, the rodeo has grown to the point that the Legion was having difficulty managing the event.
“The War Bonnet Roundup is an important part of eastern Idaho’s culture and tradition, and we are very passionate about maintaining and building upon that legacy,” said Idaho Falls Parks and Recreation Director Greg A. Weitzel. “The American Legion has done a fantastic job managing the event over the years. Their institutional knowledge of the intricacies of the rodeo is invaluable, and we will continue to have them be an integral part of the event moving forward.”
The War Bonnet Roundup Rodeo will mark its 105th anniversary in 2016. The rodeo is sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association.
Mayor Rebecca Casper is confident the rodeo will continue to generate a positive economic impact. “Over the years, our Parks & Recreation Department has honed their capabilities and expertise in rodeo management and have the necessary resources and personnel needed to operate a large event such as the rodeo,” said Casper.
According to the city, the rodeo attracts over 15,000 fans each year. A record 477 cowboys and cowgirls participated in events last year.
The American Legion will continue to operate grandstand concessions for the next three years with an option for a two-year extension. The Legion will pay 15 percent of rodeo concessions to the city.
Post 56 Commander Bob Skinner said he looks forward to working with the city. “The time is right to transfer the responsibility to a larger organization which will allow this great asset to grow even bigger and better,” said Skinner.
